Israel Vargas Franceschi (1926-2015), was instrumental in the creation of CARNAVAL SAN FRANCISCO. CARNAVAL is one of the largest annual celebrations in San Francisco. He was originally from Ponce, Puerto Rico where he played triple A baseball. When he came to San Francisco he joined a baseball team with friends from Puerto Rico. He absolutely loved to attend baseball games at Seal Stadium, Candlestick Park and at AT&T Park!
His love and pride of being Puerto Rican carried throughout his life. He was a proud member of "Orden Fraternal De Los Hijos De Puerto Rico" of Oakland, California and "El Club Puertorriqueno de San Francisco, Inc.", since 1950. He held the office of Vice-President, Sergeant of Arms and Parliamentary for the San Francisco Club. He was also a greeter and recruiter for "El Club Puertorriqueno de San Francisco", which is the Oldest Hispanic Club registered in the United States, 1912. He was also a proud long time member of the East Mission Citizen Organization in San Francisco.
Israel was known as a person who would help his neighbors, family or friends when asked and was known lovingly as "The Mayor of Bryant Street" in the Mission District of San Francisco. If he couldn't help you, he would find someone who could. His devotion and love was exuded and known throughout the neighborhood.
